The Science of Matching
The right seed
changes everything.

Most lawn failures aren't about bad gardening. They're about the wrong seed in the wrong conditions. Match the cultivar to the soil and the light — and the transformation is remarkable.

Soil Intelligence
Know your
soil.

pH is the single most important factor in lawn success — and most gardeners don't know theirs. Get it right and nutrients flow freely. Get it wrong and no amount of care or feeding will compensate.

Acid Soil
pH 4.5–6.0
Common across the Scottish Highlands, Welsh valleys, and North West England. Dark, spongy texture — but nutrient-starved without intervention.
pH 4.0 — Very AcidpH 8.5 — Alkaline
Phosphorus locks up below pH 5.5 — lawns yellow even with heavy feeding
Apply garden lime at 75g/m² to raise pH 0.5 units — always test first
Our Acid Adapted blend thrives here without any soil amendment at all
Choose nitrate-based feeds — ammonium feeds further acidify over time
🌱 Surface 0–5cmpH 4.8
🪱 Root zone 5–20cmpH 5.2
🏔 Subsoil 20cm+pH 5.6
Typical pH Range
456789
Neutral Soil
pH 6.0–7.0
The sweet spot. Found in good loam soils across the Midlands and South East. All major nutrients available at peak levels.
pH 4.0pH 8.5
At pH 6.5, all major nutrients peak — this is the target for every lawn
No soil amendment needed — regular aeration and seasonal feeding does it
Test annually — British rainfall acidifies by 0.2–0.3 pH units per year
Every Lawn Theory blend performs at its absolute best in this range
🌱 Surface 0–5cmpH 6.5
🪱 Root zone 5–20cmpH 6.8
🏔 Subsoil 20cm+pH 7.0
Typical pH Range

Alkaline Soil
pH 7.0–8.5
Chalk and limestone country — Lincolnshire, Yorkshire Wolds, South Downs. Pale, stony, prone to iron deficiency.
pH 4.0pH 8.5
Iron locks up above pH 7.5, causing yellowing — use chelated iron feeds
Sulphur granules lower pH gradually at 30–50g/m² per application
Golden Summer and Dappled Light both carry alkaline-tolerant cultivars
Water more frequently — alkaline soils have poor moisture retention
🌱 Surface 0–5cmpH 7.4

Clay Soil
Up to 30% of British gardens sit on clay. Nutrient-rich but compacts hard, waterloggs in winter, bakes in summer.
pH 4.0pH 8.5
Annual hollow-tine aeration in autumn is non-negotiable on clay
Brush sharp sand into aeration holes to create permanent drainage channels
Heavy Clay's deep root architecture naturally fractures compacted layers
Never walk on waterlogged clay — surface compaction sets instantly

Sandy Soil
Free-draining and early to warm in spring. Common in coastal areas, East Anglia, and the South East. Nutrient-hungry.
pH 4.0pH 8.5
Sandy soils need 3× more frequent feeding — nutrients leach rapidly with rain
Add organic matter annually to improve water and nutrient retention
Golden Summer's deep fescues reach moisture that surface roots can't access
Sandy soil hits drought stress within 3 days without rain in summer

Research
We don't
guess. We measure.

12 years of independent UK turfgrass trials underpin every blend we sell. These are not marketing claims — they're field measurements from British soil, in British weather.

Soil Science · pH & Nutrient Uptake
Lawns growing in soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 show up to 40% greater nutrient uptake efficiency, directly impacting colour, density, and disease resistance.
— British Turfgrass Research Group, 2022 Annual Review
Grass Physiology · Shade Performance
Deep-rooted fine fescue cultivars developed for shade demonstrate a 3× survival advantage over standard mixes receiving less than 3 hours of daily sunlight.
— Lawn Theory Internal Trial Data, 2023 (N=240 plots, 6 UK sites)
Climate Resilience · 2022 UK Drought
Turf swards with rooting depth exceeding 18cm maintained active growth for 23 additional days without supplemental irrigation versus shallow-rooted standard varieties.
— Royal Horticultural Society, Drought Impact Study 2022
Clay Soil · Root Architecture
Lawn Theory's clay-specialist cultivar mix produced 2.4× deeper root development in compacted clay profiles at 12 weeks versus leading generic seed mixes.

Year-Round
Your lawn
calendar.

Exactly what to do, and when — every month of the year. A great lawn isn't made in summer. It's made in the decisions taken across all four seasons.

Spring
  • First mow at 50mm when growth returns
  • Pre-emergent feed when soil reaches 10°C
  • Overseed bare patches from winter
  • Scarify thatch if deeper than 10mm
  • Soil pH test after winter acidification
Summer
  • Raise mowing height to 35–40mm
  • Deep water 1–2× per week, early morning only
  • Low-nitrogen summer feed, high potassium
  • Allow browning in drought — it recovers
  • Watch for chafer grubs (birds pecking lawn)
Autumn
  • Hollow-tine aeration — the most important task of the year
  • Top-dress with sandy loam after aeration
  • Autumn feed: high potassium, low nitrogen
  • Final overseed before winter
  • Rake leaves weekly to prevent fusarium
Winter
  • No traffic on frosted or waterlogged grass
  • Service mower, sharpen the blade
  • Plan next year's improvements now
  • Apply lime if pH dropped below 6.0
  • Mow lightly on mild, dry days if growing
